Sligo, Potomac Schools Walk for Homeless

By Beth Michaels

More than 425 members from Potomac Conference’s Sligo church and students from Washington Adventist University (WAU), Sligo Adventist School, and John Nevins Andrews School, all in Takoma Park, Md., participated in the annual Walk for the Homeless. The stroll took place along the scenic Sligo Creek Parkway. The Adventist group raised more than $7,700 for the Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition (SSIHC). As an extra incentive this past year, the Fannie Mae Foundation provided a $25,000 bonus to SSIHC for pulling together 1,650 walkers.

A number of Sligo members and WAU students currently act as SSIHC board members, case managers, or case management interns. All of SSIHC’s client families have been referred by county social workers. Most come from shelters and are moms and children along with a few are single men and single dads.
