Need an Idea for a Women's Ministries Event?

Story by Tamyra Horst, Pennsylvania Conference Women's Ministries director

Have you ever tried to come up with a theme for a Women's Miinistries event but just couldn't think of anything? Here are a few fun ideas for themes and gatherings to get your ladies and their friends together, connecting them with each other, having fun, and growing them deeper in their relationship with God.

Chilled, but Filled
Sounds like this time of year, doesn't it? But it also sounds like a great theme for pulling together snowmen, snowflakes-anything winter, though I'm partial to snowmen myself, especially happy, smiling ones. Serve a winter meal-like a great pot of soup and a grilled cheese bar (different breads, cheeses, and fillings) and invite a speaker-her topic might be a challenge with practical ways of staying "filled" with God. Little tubes of a creamy hand lotion would make a great favor.

Friends, Faith and Flip Flops
Encourage your ladies to invite their friends, don their summer attire and flip flops and come for a fun, summer themed event. Serve food in sand buckets with shovels for serving utensils. Use beach towels for your tablecloths. You might be able to get some inexpensive sun glasses from the dollar store as a favor. Centerpieces could be containers with sand and sea shells.

PMS
Okay, this may be the only type of PMS we girls are going to like--Pizza, a Movie and Sundaes. An evening that's simply pizza (you can create a pizza bar so everyone tops their own and then just bake or simply make a few varieties), eat and talk and then watch a movie while you enjoy ice cream sundaes. A couple of good movies to consider would be "War Room" and "Redeeming Love" (the story of Hosea and Gomer.) You can make it even more fun by inviting women to wear their pajamas.

Take Me Away
Remember the Calgon commercials? "Calgon, take me away!" We all have moments when we wish we could get away and just be pampered, so why not plan a get together that includes some pampering and TLC. Offer facials. Massage. Mani's/Pedi's. This could also be a great idea as an outreach for a local women's shelter--whether it's a shelter for women getting out of abusive relationships, a homeless shelter or a halfway house. Get the women of your church to do this as a ministry/service/way to love other women who need someone to love them. Give them one of our sharing books for women.

Love Your Selfie
Social media and cell phones have brought us into the age of selfies. Here's a great theme to connect with women or with t

eens. Have a photo booth with lots of fun props for selfies. Topics could include a variety of ways we can love our selves-from health to pampering to learning to really believe that God loves us and created us to play a role in His story. Cover it all with several speakers who will share short talks instead of a long presentation. Taking care of our bodies, our hearts and our minds.

Don't Forget to Connect
Remember that while most of these ideas sound like fun events for the women in our churches, we want to always be about connecting with those who are seeking God---even if they don't really know that's what they're looking for. So encourage your ladies to invite their friends. Advertise in the community--your local paper, bulletin boards where women frequent, boost your post on Facebook choosing a target audience of women in your community. Women are more likely to be willing to come to a fun event than a sermon or series.

And as friendships grow, they'll be open to invitations to church, small groups and Bible studies. Don't forget to invite women who are no longer attending church on a regular basis. Send them an invitation. Better yet, have someone who knows them call and invite them. Text them. Whatever it takes to connect. It's sometimes hard to come back to church after you've been gone for a while. But knowing you are missed and wanted makes it a whole lot easier.
