Adventist Radio Broadcaster, Communication Professor, Completes Nearly Five-Decade-Long Career of Investing in Young People, Radio Listeners
Story by WGTS Staff
With four-plus years at Atlantic Gateway Communications/WGTS 91.9, Mike Agee, Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, concluded a nearly 50-year career as a radio broadcaster, general manager, and educator in January.
“Closing my career with President and CEO Kevin Krueger and the WGTS team is an honor. I will look back with great satisfaction on seeing God's leading in my life. It has been truly miraculous,” says Agee.
Agee’s radio broadcasting career spans 47 years, with 38 in Adventist Christian radio. His career began at KSUC at Southwestern Union College (SWUC) in Keene, Texas, continuing on at WAUS 90.7, on the campus of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich., KTSY 89.5 at Gem State Adventist Academy in Caldwell, Idaho, and again in Texas at Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) at KJRN 88.3, The Journey.
He was also an active member and officer of the Adventist Radio Broadcasters Association (originally the Adventist Radio Network), an organization of North American Adventist radio managers, and helped with their broadcast coverage of many General Conference sessions.
Agee held many broadcasting roles, including on-air host, program director, general manager, engineer, and sales associate. Agee was also a communications department chair and professor at SWAU for 10 years, sharing his experience as he trained and mentored the next generation of communicators, while also earning his masters and doctoral degrees.
During his career, he helped many young people launch their own careers in radio. Jerry Woods, WGTS 91.9 morning host, who has worked with Agee at KTSY 89.5 in Idaho, and WGTS 91.9 in the D.C. area, says, “He's been an amazing mentor and friend. Not only has he taught countless lessons about radio, but countless lessons about life.”
Regardless of what role he had throughout the years, Agee says, “My mind is continually drawn to the stories I have heard from listeners and students about what God has done in their lives and my tiny part in that unfolding. What an amazing God we serve, that He would use a broken vessel like me to serve His purposes. Just amazing!”
“Working with Mike these last few years of his career have been a special blessing, says Krueger. We’ve dreamed of working under the same roof since the early 1990s, and it finally happened here in Washington, D.C., and for that I am grateful. Mike has faithfully served young people through education and his radio listening family with a dedicated heart and boundless creativity. I wish him the best as he moves on to a well-deserved season of retirement.”
Agee will continue to contribute in radio broadcasting as he keeps in touch with many friends and colleagues. In retirement, he plans to golf and fish, as well as spend time with his wife, Wanda, and sons, Daniel and Caleb.
