At year-end meetings last week, five Columbia Union Conference members were recognized for their contribution to the cause of Christ during a special luncheon held in their honor. This new award, called Notable Persons of Honor, spotlighted Joyce Newmyer, president of Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md.; Larry Boggess, president of the Mountain View Conference; José H. Cortés, president of the New Jersey Conference; Josephine Benton, a retired pastor; and Weymouth Spence, president of Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park.

The Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md., has become the first hospital in Montgomery County to perform a da Vinci robotic single-site operation. This comes less than a year after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved single-site instruments for the da Vinci robotic surgical system last December.

Moving from Colorado to Maryland as Adventist HealthCare’s new executive vice president and chief operating officer, Terry Forde faces a dual adventure to learn both the physical and healthcare terrain of his new state.

Adventist HealthCare (AHC) earned accolades for its work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Green Power Partnership through its purchase of more than 5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually. AHC’s purchase is the largest by a healthcare services provider in the state of Maryland, and the fourth largest nationwide.

Leaders from across the Columbia Union gathered last week for second quarter meetings called “midyear meetings.” 

A team of rehabilitation experts from Adventist HealthCare’s Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland spent a week in earthquake-ravished Haiti to provide rehabilitation care to patients with amputations, spinal cord injuries and orthopedic injuries from January’s earthquake.

The Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children, the Lourie Center, announced the appointment of Marcel Wright, MBA, to executive director. 

Rob Jepson, Adventist HealthCare’s vice president of Government Affairs and Public Affairs, was sworn in last month as chairman of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce in the state of Maryland. Jepson is a member of Chesapeake Conference’s Frederick (Md.) church.

With major land-use approvals nearly complete, Adventist HealthCare (AHC) announced it will move forward with its longstanding plans to build a comprehensive medical campus and hospital in Clarksburg, Md., and will invite other healthcare providers to collaborate on the project.
