To Kenya With Love

Story by WGTS Staff

Earlier this year, WGTS listeners generously sponsored 280 children during the annual Days of Compassion event through the organization Compassion International. This Hands and Heart project ensures that children in the 29 countries that Compassion serves have access to education, food, spiritual and medical care, all of which moves them away from the cycle of poverty.

Evening host Suzanne Cheesman traveled to Kenya in early 2026 to see firsthand Compassion’s work at the country’s headquarters, in the schools, and in the homes of the children there. She says, “My trip changed me in ways I didn’t expect. One sponsorship can truly transform a child’s life. I will always remember stepping into a family’s home about the size of an average master bathroom and asking if it was their living room.

When they gently explained that it was their entire house, I had to turn away to hide my tears.

In one corner they cooked, in another they bathed, using a bucket, the children shared a small couch, and the mother slept on the floor. It was a powerful reminder of how deeply blessed we are and how something that feels small to us can mean everything to someone else.”

Sponsoring even one child can not only change the life of that child, but it can also be life-changing for the family. Many parents have come to know Jesus because one of their children has been sponsored through Compassion.
